I am staying in a tropicals country with all year around sun and rain. Last december I decided to go for a winter vacation with my wife to Colorado USA. This is the first time we planned our vacation during winter time as I love to watch people ski or a skidding compitation and winter olampic on television.

Colorado is filled with many and beautiful ski resorts, it has his own beauty to tell. I can remmember the winter park with its enchanting mountain and pine trees cover with white snow and watching children building snow people and throwing snow ball at each other. Adults, young and old enjoying skidding and snowboard, professional is showing their skill. If you are first timer there is someone to guide you and give you some basis training. I enjoy myself and its fun to ski for the first time. I planned to return the next winter.

Others that we enjoy are the landscape inside a protected snowcat and our tour leader takes us around on a snowshoe tour of the backcountry. Imagine stepping out of your home away from home and relaxing on the deck, listening to the birds singing above as you sip a cold beverage. And when the urge to explore the woods become too much to ignore, head out along the trails and catch sight of the gorgeous mountains and the stunning lake, which is only one mile away.

Winter vacations visitors can head to South Lake Tahoe for the exceptional skiing at Heavenly Ski Resort so staying in a home or condo in the Heavenly area would be the ideal lodging choice. You can find homes that are located at the base of Heavenly and homes that are conveniently situated next to Heavenly’s Boulder Lodge. One of the downsides of the Heavenly Ski Resort is that when ski season strikes, this is where most individuals head for their skiing or snowboarding adventure. There are numerous other ski resorts to consider, however, including the Sierra at Tahoe Ski Resort, Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, and Squaw Valley. Squaw Valley is a great option with its 4,000 acres of terrain and 450 inches of annual snowfall, so don’t be afraid to explore outside the Heavenly realm since you may just find something a little less crowded and just as appealing.

That's how things stand right now. On the outskirts of town, Schloss Lebenberg is a castle that's been converted into a luxury hotel.

St. Moritz is another place in Swiss where you can planned your winter vacation for your next sking holiday. It is where visitors whoosh down the slopes alongside.

On the other hand, if you like to ski you may want to consider Alaska in Canana when planning your next ski winter vacation because it has some of the best skiing in the world.
And one of the top resorts in all of alaska is the alyeska Resort. alyeska has a top elevation slightly above 2,700 feet, a vertical drop of 2,500 and the area gets an average annual snowfall of 631 inches.

In addition to offering some of the best skiing in the world, another nice benefit of alyeska is that you won't run into long lift lines or overly crowded slopes. There are nine lifts, including six chair lifts, two surface lifts and one cable car line. The majority of their trails are designed for the intermediate skier but with 68 trails they also have countless runs for both the beginner and expert.

winter vacations : Following in a doctor's footsteps

LAWRENCE - At 17, Tan Nguyen is no Doogie Howser.
But he'd sure like to be.

Nguyen, a senior at Central Catholic High School, spent part of his summer working in a hospital where he was allowed to shadow a doctor, observe an operation, and learn the ins and outs of modern medicine.

"It was a wonderful experience," said the Haverhill teen. "It gave me an outlook on what they do while opening more doors for me."

Nguyen is one of 24 teenagers from across the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire who participated in the Shadow-a-Professional Program at Lawrence General Hospital.

During the six-week program, teenagers worked in a dozen departments at the hospital, including the nursery, pain management, physical therapy, the pharmacy and the emergency room. They shadowed nurses, doctors and technicians.

Nguyen was assigned to the pain management department and followed Dr. Rami Rustum, staff anesthesiologist and pain specialist at the hospital.

"I wasn't like a shadow walking behind him. I was actually learning," Nguyen said. "There wasn't a moment when I did not want to be there."

He not only interacted with Rustum, but was able to witness an operation up close. He was one of six students who were able to do so.

Nguyen applied for the shadow program to learn more about the medical field since he hopes to be either an anesthesiologist or a surgeon.

"Medicine interests me because I am curious about the human body and how it functions when it's exposed to diseases and chemicals," he said. "Surgery interests me because I am curious about the procedures."

He said taking part in the shadow program reinforced his desire to enter the medical field.

"The experience made me realize I can do this for the rest of my life," Nguyen said. "It doesn't seem to be so stressful all the time. The schedule did not bother me."

Others, such as Connie Cheng of Andover and Lauren Drapeau, both 17, were not too sure.

Cheng, 17, who also shadowed Rustum, made a U-turn after finishing the program. Instead of working in a hospital, the Andover High School senior decided pharmacology was best suited for her.

Drapeau, a senior at Central Catholic, volunteered in the X-ray department, but realized she likes working with children.

"This is not only about observing patients with a student or a potential doctor," Rustum said. "They are learning what obstacles can arise, how to overcome them, and even what to expect in medical school."

To qualify for the program, high school juniors and seniors submit an essay outlining the reasons why they want to participate, what profession they hope to pursue, and what they would like to learn from the experience.

The students also go through an interview process.

Betsy Rayner, director of volunteers at the hospital, looks for confidence, passion, drive and motivation when choosing a participant.

One applicant was so interested in participating, he spent his winter vacation doing research on orthopedic surgery.

Students can intern in several departments, including special care nursery, pain management, pathology, pharmacy, radiology and ultrasound.

Rayner said 14 of the 24 applicants this year wanted to work in the nursery, followed by the emergency room and surgery. The pharmacy was another popular department with five applicants as opposed to one or two last year.

"I think the students want to work in the emergency room because they watch shows like "ER" and see all the stuff that happens and want to see the excitement," Rayner said. "They want to see the crisis, the chaos, and the chance of saving a life right then and there."

The students commit to 12 hours a week for six weeks. In addition to shadowing a doctor or other hospital staff member, they must volunteer for four hours in another department in the hospital.

Rayner said she has seen the program mushroom in the eight years she's been running it.

"I think the program is popular because they see what goes in a hospital every day in and out, during the tough days and good days," she said.

Over the years, Rayner said former participants have become doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

She doesn't even mind if a student changes his mind about entering the medical field. This summer, three of the 24 participants chose another career path.

"It's OK. I'd rather have them find out now than later when it may be too late," she said.

Nguyen, a member of the National Honor Society at Central, is holding on to his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor.

"I want to be a doctor so I can help people, save lives, alleviate people's problems and pains," he said. "I want to make a difference in society."
winter vacations

By Yadira Betances

winter vacations : Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT - "The days of the station wagon ski vacation are done and over with," says Adam Barker, Marketing and Media Manager of the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Today, many winter vacationers are looking to stay where they can take advantage of a number of experiences, on and off the slopes — a 'multi-faceted winter vacation.'"

Part of a diverse vacation includes visiting a number of ski and snowboard resorts, and the Salt Lake CVB steps up to the plate to fulfill that need with its Ski Salt Lake Super Pass. Now in its ninth season, the Super Pass is good for day passes at the four Cottonwood Canyons resorts: Alta, Snowbird, Brighton or Solitude. The pass can be loaded with up to six days of skiing or riding and also includes free round-trip transportation from downtown and suburban Salt Lake via UTA ski buses and throughout the Salt Lake Valley on Trax light rail. Depending on how many days are purchased, users can ski Salt Lake for as little as $48 a day.

Eric Thompson, Salt Lake CVB Director of Marketing and mastermind behind the Super Pass, says, “The Super Pass allows guests to ski where they want, when they want—all at a very attractive and affordable price. It’s the perfect one-stop shopping approach to skiing Salt Lake.”

The Super Pass is sold through local Salt Lake Valley lodging properties and is frequently packaged in conjunction with lodging specials. The Super Pass is also sold online in cooperation with Travelocity.

Located just 40 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport, the resorts average 500 inches of snow each year and collectively offer more than 7,500 skiable acres serviced by 33 ski lifts. Says Jay Burke, Director of Marketing and Media Relations for Solitude Mountain Resort, “We’ve got the best of all worlds. Unbeatable snow and nearly instant access to the resorts from the city make Salt Lake an easy choice for winter sports enthusiasts everywhere.”

The Salt Lake City International Airport has over 990 scheduled daily flights offering more than 84,000 daily airplane seats through Salt Lake. Delta Airlines alone has 108 non-stop flights servicing Salt Lake, allowing more than half of the U.S. population to reach Salt Lake City in less than two and a half hours.

Proximity, however, doesn't translate to crowding on the slopes. According to a study conducted by Ski Utah, there are approximately 153 skiers per acre at Utah resorts — fewer than half the 323 per acre in Colorado.

All content herein copyright © 1994-2006 First Tracks!! Nationwide there's been a 25 percent increase in the number of passports applied for this year compared to last.

It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks to get your passport back, but the government is now saying it could take longer than two months because of the increased demand. So if you are planning any winter vacations, it's in your best interest to apply early. You can pay an extra $60 to expedite the process.

What You Need
To apply for a passport you need a certified birth certificate or your naturalization papers, a driver's license and a picture. You'll also need to fill out an application form.

The total cost for a person age 16 and older is around $100, but different cities charge different fees to process the picture. A passport for children under age 16 runs about $82.

Carlson Passport Nights
Carlson Wagonlit Travel is offering to help, by hosting a number of passport nights. There you can get all of the necessary paperwork, pictures and learn about various trips.

The events are being held at the Inver Grove Heights Carlson office Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the Plymouth Carlson office Aug. 22 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Nearest Passport Office
To find the nearest passport office to you, head here. And the prices offered by an aggressive American tour operator have made beachside Barcelona a worthy competitor to the better-known winter vacations of the Costa del Sol near Malaga on Spain's southernmost Mediterranean coast.

For nearly 25 years now, American tour operators — Sun Holidays of Orlando, Fla., (www.sunholidaytours.com, 1-800-422-8000) and Grand Circle Tours of Boston (www. grandcircletravel.com, 1-800-959-0405) — have vied with each other to lure Americans over age 60 to winter vacations on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The great attraction has been cost. For just slightly less than $1,000 per person for two weeks and $1,200 and up for three weeks, including round-trip trans-Atlantic airfare, they have been offering fall/winter vacations spent in the many high-rise Spanish hotels that line the Costa del Sol around Torremolinos and Fuengirola, near Malaga and Gibraltar.
That price has persuaded tens of thousands of mature Americans to substitute Spain for a winter vacation in Miami Beach or Phoenix. Though it certainly isn't swimming weather in Spain in the fall/winter months, ocean swimming isn't a popular activity among elderly people anyway, and the high quality of Spain's hotels, cuisine, culture and sightseeing near Malaga (Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Gibraltar) has tipped the scales for a great many Americans.

Copyright © 2006

winter vacations : 2006/07 Winter European programs

Insight Vacations has announced that its Winter European program is selling fast with bookings for 2006/07 up almost 30 per cent in its first few weeks. With a fantastic mix of warm and wintery destinations and a selection of styles of travel, Insight has cornered the market in premium escorted winter vacations.

Lorraine Sharp, managing director, Insight Vacations said, “Overall our business is even stronger than last year, and we are predicting this growth to continue. Traditionally, as customers try to organize their Christmas holiday plans at the last minute, bookings are made much closer to departure. It is important for agents to get in quick before tours are completely sold out.

“While all tours are performing well, our most popular tour this year has been the Winter Explorer, which shows how interested Australian travellers are in seeing all their favourite places like Venice, Florence, Paris and Amsterdam in the quieter winter season”.

“Interestingly, the surprise hit for this season has been Vienna, Prague and Budapest tour. We are finding there is a lot of interest in these central European countries with the adventurous Aussie travellers, particularly those on their second or third trip to Europe and I think we will continue to see excellent growth in this emerging region.

“Italy is of course one of the most popular countries to visit over winter. It’s relatively mild climate and relaxed culture keeps wooing Australian travellers time and again. In response to clients wanting to explore Italy more thoroughly, we offer a Southern Italy and Sicily tour, an Amazing Italy (which takes in Rome and Florence and Venice) along with an Easy Pace Italy style tour, which allows travellers wanting a flexible itinerary to relax and enjoy Italy however they want.

“Egypt has shown no sign of wavering this season, with travellers as keen as ever to discover the ancient world. With five different tours, Insight remains one of the largest operators to carry Australians visiting Egypt”.

Insight launched its 2006/07 program on the back of a successful 2006 European summer travel season. It’s Insight’s winning combination of quality, impeccable service, perfectly planned itineraries, and reputation as a premium quality tour operator has ensured it has continued to set itself apart in the market.

Throughout its history, Insight Vacations has built its enviable reputation by offering premium quality, leisurely touring vacations.

Copyright © Agents Support Systems

winter vacations : Finding Snowmobile Rentals In Idaho

Snowmobiling in idaho is an exciting winter adventure. Limitless sites and attractions are waiting throughout the continent. The prices and the weather are the major elements in deciding the prime travel periods.

A good compromise is to choose the period before and after the busy summer season, because the weather is mostly good and prices are lower. Southern europe also offers a nice experience in the winter, with reasonably mild weather.

If nice weather is important to you, the winter is one of the worst times to see northern Europe. Gray, wet and cold weather is common December through February. And daylight is in short supply, so evenings will be spent primarily indoors.

However, winter travel offers the best prices. Italy or Greece would be good choices if you are limited to a winter vacation.

There are some other benefits to winter travel. Winter festivals and New Year's are exciting times in Europe. Cities such as Paris are beautiful when decorated for the Christmas holidays. New Year's eve in Paris is exciting, with parties, festivals and night life. Several other countries have holiday events and festivals as well.

The biggest benefit of winter travel is that you will see fewer other tourists. Your experience will be more authentic, seeing European life without the crush of people.

Early spring finds most of europe still chilly and wet, especially in the north, so streets are uncrowded. Though not great for swimming, the weather is fine for outdoor tours and sightseeing. Budget-minded travelers will like the cheaper prices for airfare and hotels.

May and June are among the best months to visit most European countries. The weather is warm on most of the continent and it's still uncrowded. There are a variety of festivals and cultural events throughout europe in May and June. Because the tourist season hasn't started into full swing yet, you can get good deals on accommodations and plane fare. An added benefit is few lines at most tourist attractions and plenty of room on tours and in restaurants.

Once schools let out, europe quickly becomes crowded. The summer months are very busy and hotels get booked quickly. Because of the demand, everything is more expensive in the summer. Tourist destinations are very crowded and you will wait in lines at many attractions.

Northern Europe, with its good weather and smaller crowds, would be a good option for summer travel. Whatever season you choose, there are more than enough attractions to provide a great European holiday.

by Glynnis Farrow

winter vacations : Alaska's Alyeska Resort

The "Land of the Midnight Sun" has always been an amazing source of raw, rugged beauty and many think of alaska only as a great summertime vacation destination. On the other hand, if you like to ski you may want to consider alaska when planning your next ski vacation because it has some of the best skiing in the world.

Night skiing is not only allowed but it may be one of most awe inspiring ski experiences you'll ever have. Snow capped mountains, hanging glaciers and the infamous Northern Lights are just a few of the visual bonuses of night skiing at Alyeska. It was ranked number nine in Skiing Magazine's annual top twenty-five killer ski trip reviews.

The season begins in mid November and runs through mid April at alyeska and with close to sixteen hours of daylight each day during April, this area of alaska boasts the longest period of daylight anywhere in the United States. On the other hand, in December, there are only about seven hours of daylight but with their fabulous night time skiing it's really not an issue.

The alyeska Prince Hotel is the wonderful place to stay. You'll enjoy elegant rooms, fine dining and nightly entertainment is also available. In addition, there are other nightlife watering holes in the area that are not associated with the hotel.

If tubing interests you, then visiting the Glacier Tubing Park is an absolute must. It features two lanes of terrain and a surface lift and everyone in the family will enjoy spending time at the tubing park. The alyeska Terrain Park is a must for snowboarding enthusiasts. Other winter activities that can be enjoyed in and around the alyeska resort include flight seeing, heliskiing, ocean cruising tours, dog sledding, ice climbing, back country skiing, mountaineering and polar bear watching tours.

The alyeska resort not only offers some of the best skiing on the continent but when you consider the broad range of available winter activities that can be enjoyed by the entire family, it represents one of the best winter vacation destinations in the world - bar none.

by Kevin Erickson

winter vacations : Italy for Romantics

The same combination that makes skiing in France so irresistible — great food, good wine, terrific slopes — lures skiers to Italy, too. To ski? In Italy? Do Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn ring a bell?
Italy encompasses more of the Alps than any other country. And it should come as no surprise that the XX Olympic Winter Games will be held in Turin (February from 10-26, 2006).

The Dolomite mountains are home to the sophisticated and elegant city of Cortina D'Ampezzo. Slopes are paradise for advanced as well as intermediate skiers, and there are trails for cross-country enthusiasts. Restaurants satisfy those who savor homemade pasta and risotto. Discos do exist, but dining out is nightlife enough for most.

Celebrities and connoisseurs alike come here to ski and eat and enjoy. Where they're most likely to stay: the Miramonti Majestic Grand Hotel, former holiday residence of the Hapsburg dynasty, and as regal as the name implies.

Located on the central square, Hotel Ancora provides a warm welcome.
winter vacations

Susan Breslow Sardone,

winter vacations : Ski Switzerland

St. Moritz, Switzerland
The epitome of ski-scene elegance, St. Moritz is where visitors whoosh down the slopes alongside bold-face names.
Take your cues from the glitterati: Sip an après-ski cafe fertig (coffee with a shot of schnapps)... dine at the famous La Marmite... shop at Armani and Cartier. And the skiing's wonderful, whether down the mostly intermediate-level Nordic slopes or across 75 miles of cross-country trails.

The place to see and be seen when the slopes close for the night is the exclusive and majestic Badrutt's Palace Hotel. Sure, you could head out West or to the cold Northeast. But why resist the chance to visit a true European storybook village where you can hear the jingle of sleigh bells on a horse-drawn carriage...schuss down the world's most challenging mountains...dine on gourmet food and wine...and then dance the night away?

Kitzbühel, Austria
A quaint Alpine town with a gloss of glamour and superb skiing, Kitzbühel offers chalets with roaring fires, miles of top-notch cross-country trails, spectacular intermediate downhill slopes, and evening revelry.
Skiers stop on their way home from the slopes at mountain huts for a Jagertee, a potent mix of tea, spices, and 180-proof Austrian rum.

After dinner, the most energetic head for the dance floor.
Hotel Tennerhof, an old-world lodge run by aristocrats, is one place to get some rest. Utah, particularly Park City, is one of the best places to enjoy winter sports (just ask the Olympians of the world) and when the weather warms up, you’ll find no sweeter sights than those provided while hiking through the state parks or trotting through the lush valleys on horseback.

Park City is nearly overflowing with vacation possibilities in a way that will satisfy travelers with all kinds of needs and interests. Ski lovers will enjoy the 350 inches of snow that falls per year, as well as the 3,300 skiable acres. Nothing compares to an early morning thrill ride down the tallest mountain you can find, if that’s your style, that is. If you’re more of a beginner, you’ll certainly learn to love the slopes if Park City’s dry powder and groomed trails are there to give you your first lessons. True adventurers can even be dropped off by helicopter or snowcat to embrace acres of untouched terrain as their very own.

But non-skiers should not despair. From sleigh rides to tubing, snowshoeing to snowmobiling, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the crisp mountain air without participating in the most traditional activity. Stray from the well-traveled paths if you like, and strike out on an adventure of your own design.

If you paid attention to the world’s affairs during 2002, you’ll remember that the Winter Olympics were held here in Utah. The pride of hosting this prestigious event still emanates from the mountains, and the impressive Olympic Park that was used for many competitions is still being used as an athletic training ground.

Visitors are welcomed to watch the experts in action, tour the two museums on the premises, or even hop into a bobsled and see what it feels like to experience 4G’s at 80 miles an hour. Ski Jumping, Bobsled, and Skeleton competitions continue to be held here, so schedule your trip accordingly if you’re interested to see the world’s finest athletes in these somewhat unheralded events.

If you’re more of a summer traveler, then be sure that your days will be just as jam-packed. Schedule an excursion with a local tour operation, and you could find yourself scaling the Uinta mountains, rafting the white water rapids of Weber river, or climbing aboard a 100 year old train for a day of sightseeing, old-fashioned dining, and entertainment.

By Caitlin Moore

winter vacations : Winter Park is a Vacationer's Wonderland

Colorful Colorado is so filled with charming ski resorts and summertime activity hotbeds that choosing one over any other can be a difficult task. Each has its own appeal, but when it comes down to it, you can’t go wrong with Winter Park. Any season of the year, this enchanting, mountainous, brimming-with-life village has a few ideas about how you should spend your long-awaited vacation.

For starters, wintry weather travelers should know that Winter Park has been singled out as one of the finest places to ski and snowboard. This region receives more of the powdery stuff than any other resort in the state, and five distinct mountains make for a practically infinite number of runs, trails, and exhilarating views. Whether you set out to conquer Mary Jane, Parsenn Bowl, Vasquez Cirque, Vasquez Ridge, or Winter Park itself, you’ll have plenty of terrain to keep yourself busy.

Non-skiers can enjoy the landscape from inside a protected snowcat, or can follow the leader on a snowshoe tour of the backcountry. To meet up with the rest of the group, hop on the Zephyr Express chairlift and within 15 minutes you’ll be ready to have lunch at one of the Sunspot Summit restaurants with all your traveling companions. A cold-weather vacation to Winter Park will ensure a good time is had by everyone.

Once the snow has melted, the exposed mountainsides won’t leave you hanging when it comes to filling your winter vacation hours. Winter Park has been nicknamed the “Mountain Bike Capital of the USA,” and you’ll see why after you’ve spent a little time here. Rent yourself an awesome bike and choose a trail that is right for your skill level; from beginner to ultra-adrenaline advanced, an experienced guide will show you the way to your adventure sport fantasies come true. With 600 miles of trails and the stunning backdrop of Fraser Valley at hand, you could devote your entire trip to this thrilling activity if you wanted to.

If your muscles tire, however, (don’t worry, that’s normal) then make time for more laid-back pursuits. Ride the chairlift to the highest peak you’ll find, 10,700 feet, and drink in the sight of the Continental Divide as it contrasts with the gentle valley. For a quick and giggle-inducing way of returning to earth, slip down the 3,000 foot long alpine slide, the biggest one in existence.

More family fun will ensue as you continue to take advantage of Winter Park’s unique summer offerings. The Human Maze, a wooden labyrinth of huge proportions, will put everyone to the test, and the Rock ‘N Roll Gyro, which mimics the conditions of space travel, will offer a glimpse into the life of a fighter pilot. Mini golf fans will be entertained and educated at the same time, as each of the holes on the local course represents a different historic aspect of the Fraser Valley.

In addition to the everyday attractions, several festivals are held throughout the season. Check out the High Altitude Chili Cook off to add some spice to your life, or visit Rockfest to take in some tunes. From the Jazz Festival in July to Oktoberfest in the fall, there’s always something going on to get people together.

If you’re ready to explore Grand County, (that’s Winter Park and the surrounding area) then you should be sure to reserve yourself a great place to stay while you’re here. We all know that the lodging situation can either drag your winter vacation down, or give it that extra bit of oomph that results in memories untarnished by unpleasant details. Plan for a great vacation in every sense by checking out all the rental options in the area.

In the winter, a ski-in, ski-out condo would be ideal, and in the summer, a spacious chalet near the village would definitely meet your needs. There are dozens of great properties to choose from that contain well-equipped kitchens, entrancing views, plentiful bed space and enough bathrooms to guarantee an absence of tension between the kids as they get ready in the mornings.

So if this sounds like the kind of vacation that you’ve been waiting for, start planning today. Map out your activities, leaving plenty of time for relaxation, of course, and go online to choose the Winter Park Vacation Rental that will add to your experience in so many ways.

By Caitlin Moore

winter vacations : The Perks of a Winter Park Vacation

You’re oh-so-excited about your next vacation, and you’ve even started packing already. You check things off in your head as you sit in traffic; ski gear, sweaters, new boots…what else is there to do? You suddenly realize you’ve been avoiding something because it’s such an integral yet tricky component of the leaving town process; locating a place to stay that won’t let you down or break the bank. This is your least favorite part about preparing for a trip, (who daydreams about booking a hotel?) but you know it has to be done.

It sounds like you’ve yet to become acquainted with the idea of a vacation rental. Perhaps you always thought it would cost too much to stay in a well-equipped condo with tons of amenities. Sure, you’d like more space than you usually get in the average hotel room, but isn’t traveling supposed to be a little tight? Not necessarily. Things will go a lot smoother and tempers will flare on far fewer occasions if everyone in your group has enough room to spread out and enough conveniences to feel taken care of.

For example, your upcoming trip to Winter Park, Colorado is something that everyone has been looking forward to. You chose this spot for its amazing ski conditions, snowboard-friendliness, and for the fact that it’s the closest major resort to the Denver airport. Why not continue the theme of expediency as you pick out a place to stay?

A ski-in, ski-out condo with cathedral ceilings and a wraparound deck offering a staggering view of the magnificent peaks would be your dream set-up. There is a place like this, a few places like this, actually, and they aren’t just reserved for the rich and famous. Every year, normal, noisy, fabulous-in-their-own-way families just like yours unpack their bags in spacious mountain homes with all the amenities of home.

Don’t worry about packing your hair dryer or your favorite robe, as these will be waiting for you in your home away from home. Don’t even make the mistake of bringing too many clothes along, because the washer and dryer on the premises will let you keep your laundry perpetually clean and your suitcases light.

Your last vacation usually took a nose dive in the evenings, when everyone fought over the shower, sleeping arrangements, and what to watch on TV. This time, you’ll have the kids inventing all new things to argue about as there will be plenty of bathrooms, beds, and entertainment options for all. From the pool table to the hot tub, everyone will keep themselves busy in the not-too-close quarters of your temporary hideaway.

Some winter vacation rentals are more extravagant than others of course, but with a little research you’ll surely be able to fine one that suits you and your companions as well as your pocketbook. Remember, Winter Park is also an exciting place to visit during the summer, and the prices will be much lower.

By Caitlin Moore

winter vacations : Winter vacation in Canana

Canada is a great winter vacation destination. It sits just near Lac du Bourget (Bourget Lake), looked upon by the Alps that surround it. Chambery is a city that can be both visited in the summer and your winter vacation. In the winter there are a number of ski resorts within easy driving distance. In the summer those same Alps that were skied, become hiking and backpacking trails and campgrounds.

The center of Chambery is the ‘old town’ it includes a Chateau, once the residence of the dukes of Savoie, a 15th century Cathedral and a fine arts museum. There is also a ‘Fontaine des Elephants’ (Elephants Fontaine) built in honor of the Comte de Boigne, who bestowed upon the city much wealth. A large portion of his personal wealth came from India, hence the Elephant Fontaine.

The center of Chambery offers not only tourist attractions but also many shops for buying your favorite French goods. If you are lucky it might be market day and you can buy some fresh local produce. Like so many cities in France Chambery is not only charming, it is also small enough to be walked comfortably. You will be able to see the center without getting sore feet! But if you do have that fear there is a tourist ‘train’ that will take you through the center and let you visit with as little walking as possible.

Chambery makes a good base for exploring the French Alps especially during the winter as it is within easy driving distance of such ski resort towns as Grenoble, Albertville, La Clusaz, Courchevel, Alpe d’Huez, Chamonix and Val d’Isère. In the summer other outdoor activities are possible including hiking and camping. As Chambery is close to three national parks, Parc national de la Vanoise, Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse and Parc Naturel Régional du Massif des Bauges. Other close natural attractions include, Lac du Bourget and Lac d’Aiguebelette. Two other popular summer lakes are Annecy Lake, within an hour’s drive and Lake Geneva, two hours’ drive.

Getting to Chambery is easy as it has a modern airport; the official name is Aéroport de Chambéry. The airport code is CMF. At the moment there are a number of ‘no thrills’ airlines like Flybe and Jet2.com that have regular service to Chambery. These ‘no thrills’ airlines fly from selected major European destinations like Amsterdam and Bruxelles along with such UK destinations as, Birmingham, Exeter, Manchester and Southampton.

Chambery can also be accessed by car from the A41 Autoroute Exit 13, Chambery Nord. Chambery is a little over an hour’s drive from Lyon and about a seven hour drive from Paris. Chambery also has train access. If you plan on coming from Paris the best thing to do is take the TGV (high speed train), it only takes about an hour and a half and then transfer to a regional train in Lyon that goes to Chambery.

Chambery can also be used as a base to visit other European cities and countries like Geneva, Switzerland and Turin in Italy. Each are within in a two hour drive.

By Jeff Steiner

winter vacations : Winter Olympics Travel

Places Where Winter Olympics History was Made
Imagine the excitement of schussing down the same mountain where a legendary skier earned a Winter Olympics gold medal for his nation.
Or figure skating in the same rink where a young Winter Olympics prodigy such as Sarah Hughes executed perfect triple lutzes. Or even dramatically careening down a world-famous Winter Olympics toboggan run, hugging your travel partner with all your might.

Out of the Spotlight
If you're interested in visiting a Winter Olympics site for your winter vacation and participating in cold-weather sports, I suggest you make plans to travel to a former location. The spotlight is off these Winter Olympics destinations, yet their world-class facilities remain.
Ice rinks and ski hills that once hosted athletes at the peak of their game are now peopled with energetic amateurs.

Several years ago I visited Lake Placid, where facilities that once hosted top athletes were later filled with visitors having a great time at areas groomed for the pros. In this and many other Winter Olympics venues, the host city built spectacular sports centers that remain open for public use.
Time has not stood still in any of these world-famous destinations, of course. The ski trails in New Hampshire offer some of the most challenging skiing east of the Rockies, while the small town atmosphere of much of this region offers a low-key, congenial ambiance after hours.

From Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch, appealing to expert skiers and novices alike with its 55 groomed trails and its intensive snowmaking, to easily accessible Loon Mountain in Lincoln, geared toward intermediate skiers but accommodating experts and beginners as well with its 50 trails, to any number of other great ski resorts, the snow is superb, the skiing fantastic, and the après ski facilities warm and inviting.

The many hotels and motels in the White Mountains do their utmost to provide tender loving care to their guests, offering luxuries such as spacious and comfortable rooms, many with whirlpool baths; super-heated pools; saunas; exercise rooms; and excellent dining facilities to create the perfect finale to a day on the slopes. One such place, Indian Head Resort in Lincoln, offers a great family atmosphere and accommodations for both small and large groups. Discount rates on the most popular ski trails are available at Indian Head; the resort offers a Multi-Mountain Ski Passport especially for its many international skiers. The passport provides unlimited access to up to nine Ski New Hampshire resorts, all within an hour's drive to each other, and with free shuttle service to all the participating ski areas.

Lessons are available at many resorts, for skiers ranging from beginners to expert. Waterville Valley in particular has an interesting program. Lessons are available seven days a week throughout the season, and include adaptive ski lessons, lessons which teach physically and mentally disabled children and adults to ski. For a family with both able-bodied and disabled members, the adaptive program provides a valuable opportunity for the whole family to share an exciting and valuable vacation experience.

New Hampshire Welcomes Snowmobilers.

Over 7000 miles of snowmobile trails exist in New Hampshire - much of them in the White Mountains - and the clubby nature of snowmobilers makes for a great group experience. The resort areas in the region recognize that, and cater to snowmobile enthusiasts with the same care they do skiers. Group rates, special group programs, even accommodations for special club events are available all winter.

Many of the resorts are recognized as snowmobile-friendly by the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association. The organization offers safety classes, listings of tours and snowmobile vacations, and a database which compiles up-to-date conditions on New Hampshire snowmobile trails.

The White Mountains region of New Hampshire offers a wealth of winter vacation experiences for everyone - skier or snowboarder, snowboarder or snowmobiler, able-bodied or disabled, for families and for associations of good friends. During the summer, Colorado blooms with wonderful sites and outdoor adventures. And it's hiking that tops the summer activities on a Colorado vacation. While most people think of winter and skiing when they think of vacationing in Colorado you should know that Colorado is known as a summer destination too.

There are so many things to do and places to see in this centrally located state. Colorado is such a varied destination. You can enjoy the rolling plains on the eastern side of the state, mountains and valleys in central Colorado, and mesas and buttes in the west. In every area, there are hiking trails to get you into the remote places that most people miss from there cars.

Hiking is a family favorite when vacationing in Colorado. There are many easy hikes that don't demand more than a couple of hours to complete. Other hikes can take the whole day, while there are even long-distant, camping hikes you can partake in. It doesn't matter if you're a couch potato, from the city, or an athlete, when you come to Colorado you will want to get out of your car and enjoy the abundance of views that Colorado has to offer.

While hiking in Colorado, you will be able to enjoy seeing a myriad of wildlife and wildflowers. This is what Colorado is noted for in the summer months. There are numerous public lands that make a nature hike possible to your family.

Little Causeway lake in the idyllic Flat Tops Wilderness Area is a nice three mile round-trip hike in the Northwest portion of Colorado. Little Causeway Lake sits just below the buttressed walls of the Devils Causeway. This is an extraordinary fin of volcanic rock that connects two high alpine mesas.

The short hiking trail passes though wildflower-filled clearings and arrives at the tranquil Causeway Lake. This area is home to beavers, ducks woodpeckers, and elk. You will love watching the wildlife and viewing the colorful wildflowers in the area.

For a longer day hike you might want to visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The only path you will follow through the Great Sand Dunes are the footprints of the hikers that just preceded you. You might not even find their footprints if the wind has come up and erased them.

This wilderness of sand covers 33,000 acres and rewards hikers with a sublime and majestic isolation among the towering sand dunes that are constantly changing with each breeze. After reaching and descending the first dune, you will imagine that you are in the Middle East.

It is a two mile hike through the dunes, but on arrival back to the visitor center you will be greeted by the refreshing river that flows at the base of the dunes. Children love playing in the river as it is like spending a day at the beach. The sand backs up water and makes the river pulsate with waves.

When you're looking for a hiking expedition while on your Colorado vacation, you might want to do a long-distance jaunt. Long distance hikes are intended for the gonzo backpackers. A long-distance trail in Colorado is very strenuous but, because you will be camping along the way, they can be experienced in segments. An example of a hiking expedition is:

The Gore Range Trail, which is outside of Vail, runs 55 miles down the entire length of the Gore Range. Those vacationers that have skied Vail, Copper Mountain, or Keystone in the winter have experienced moments of inspiration created by the spectacular views of the rugged granite peaks of the Gore Range. In the summer, these peaks of the Gore Range provide the best, easy-access backpacking in Colorado.

The Gore Range Trail ascends over one magnificent mountain pass after another. With each mountain crest, the trail descends into lush valleys ablaze with wildflowers. If you want to backpack hike this trail, plan your Colorado vacation for at least two weeks. You can shorten the hike though by hiking to Wheeler Lakes from a trailhead at Copper Mountain.

You will be hiking from 8,700 feet to 12,000 feet along the Gore Range Trail. Remember that this is a leave-no-trace area and you should stay on the trail at all times. Take only photographs and leave no footprints.

Here's a Colorado wildlife fact that may help you plan your Colorado vacation and where to hike: If you want to see bald eagles during your Colorado vacation, you can see them while hiking around Barr Lake in Metro Denver.

Enjoy your Colorado winter vacation by hiking and viewing the scenery that most people miss from their car. You will love the different parts of the state that you will see while hiking in the tranquil countryside and mountains. You will never regret your Colorado vacation as you will see some of the most beautiful and spectacular scenery in North America.

by Jim Bruce

winter vacations : The Island With The Most Return Visitors

Fourteen years ago, my husband and I visited the island of Barbados on a cruise ship. Barbados is the farthest island of the Caribbean chain, and once we stepped off the ship, our love affair with the island started.

Being a travel consultant, I had read up on the island, and the images of "flying fish" and "green monkeys" stirred my imagination. Also the fact that there is nothing but water separating Barbados and the coast of Africa meant we were going to truly be in the West Indies, and close to the equator. That alone was enough for a sun and beach lover!

When our ship docked, we opted to take an island cruise via taxi. Four hours later, we had covered the island's coastline from the calm waters of the west coast on the Caribbean Sea, to the raging Atlantic coast on the east, and the lively south coast. You just have to love an island that offers a completely different experience on all coasts. When the cruise ship pulled out to sea, I can remember having a longing for an island that I had only experienced for a day.

Upon returning home, we started planning a land based trip to the island. Being a beach lover, we made reservations for the next year on west coast of the island. I remembered the water being glassy calm, and longed to spend lazy days at the beach. The west coast attracts the rich and famous, and is home to fabulous homes, hotels and villas. This coastline is located on the Caribbean Sea, and the water is perfect for snorkeling and swimming. Fine dining is a fact of life, and Barbados is known for some of the best restaurants in the world.

As we started to meet other vacationers, we quickly learned that most of them had been to the island many times before. I found this unusual, since most Caribbean vacationers opt to experience new islands. What was even more surprising, many of the English and Canadian visitors spend the entire winter season on the island every year. It certainly made us "short termers" with our two week vacation.

My curiosity about these long term repeat winter vacations prompted me to ask why they returned year after year. Their answers centered around the friendly locals, variety of lodging that caters to long term visitors, sunny weather, great food and a standard of living that is conducive to making the island a second winter home.

After a week of being beach bums, we ventured out to the southern coast, and found the St Lawrence Gap. As we walked the mile long Gap area, I knew this would be our future spot on the island each year. The west coast is rather sedate, and spread out compared to the lively south coast. We found more than 20 restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, shopping, and a great beach all in one area. We could hardly contain ourselves til next years vacation. The love affair with Barbados was in full swing.

Thirteen years later, we are still in love. The same driver picks us up at the airport each year, and welcomes us back home. As timeshare members, we have made many friends over the years. Who would have thought that fourteen years ago we would have English, Canadian, Danish and Bajan friends that we keep in touch with throughout the year, and can't wait to see each winter season.

As soon as winter hits here in the Midwest, I have thoughts of eating flying fish and seeing the green monkeys playing outside our balcony in the morning. Do the fish really fly? Well, they skim over the water, and they do have wings. Are the monkeys really green? Their color could best be described as a combination of green, brown and yellow.

The real reality is the sun shines brighter, the water is like a warm bath, and some of the most friendly people occupy this 160 mile paradise. I feel safe there, and unfortunately gain weight each year eating great food from one side of the island to the other. And when I get a travel request for Barbados, I can hardly contain my excitement telling a client all the inns and outs of the island.

This is a brief story about a love affair with an island, and its people. At times I feel guilty about not having the same feeling about the other islands I've visited in the Caribbean. After all, I am a Caribbean travel consultant, and I am not supposed to be partial to just one island. I love all of the Caribbean islands, but I'm in love with Barbados.

If your curosity is peaked after reading this article, then be advised after one visit, your future travel plans may head you in the same direction each year.

By Linda Thompkins

winter vacations : The Island With The Most Return Visitors

Fourteen years ago, my husband and I visited the island of Barbados on a cruise ship.

Some vacation rentals are more extravagant than others of course, but with a little research you’ll surely be able to fine one that suits you and your companions as well as your pocketbook. Remember, Winter Park is also an exciting place to visit during the summer, and the prices will be much lower.

After you’ve heard about the hiking, biking, kayaking, festivals, shopping, and dining options that the warm weather months offer to visitors, you’ll feel perfectly pleased to check out the Rockies in their summer splendor. A chalet tucked away in a grove of blue spruce or an apartment within the village, which will be bustling with music and entertainment of all kinds, by the way, will make you happy that you chose to come during Winter Park’s “off” season. As you’ll tell your friends when you return, there’s nothing very “off” about wildflowers, refreshing breezes, and all the rugged outdoor adventures you could ask for.

If you still feel a bit hesitant, just think of the heroic role you’ll play in the eyes of your family after they walk through the doors of a vacation rental that exceeds their highest expectations. Just a little research on your part will surely uncover the perfect place, so take your time to locate the getaway spot that will truly take you far from your present state of mind.

Go online to find a Winter Park Vacation Rental that you’ll feel comfortable in, and get ready to replace your daydreaming with a bigger and better reality.

HomeAway.com has thousands of vacation rental listings located all over the world, so make this your first stop on the way to planning a fabulous trip.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Caitlin_Moore

winter vacations : Top 10 Winter Getaways

Summer is typically the season that everyone thinks of when planning their vacations. Sparkling water and beautiful beaches abound, while the town provides access to some of the freshest fruits and vegetables available and a wide variety of activities such as fishing, golfing, and diving. Come in the summer for the Blueberry Festival, or venture out in the winter for ice fishing, skiing, snowboarding, or snowmobiling. Whatever your plans entail and no matter when you plan to visit, there is sure to a vacation rental that facilitates the vacation of your dreams.

When visiting South Haven in the winter, easy access to the lake and the state parks in the area is a necessity in order to participate in the activities you have planned. A South Haven vacation rental that is located right next to a state park, surrounded by acres of county land, and has miles of Lake Michigan frontage is exactly what you need. You can go cross-country skiing on the property and into the state park or make your way down to the water for a day of ice fishing. At the end of the day, settle in front of the fire in this cozy, secluded home and keep an eye out for wildlife as they pass through the woods that are all around.

While winter activities are abundant in South Haven, summer is a more popular time as the crowds come out to take advantage of this beautiful setting and the brilliant water. Since many individuals come for the water, the most convenient lodging option is a beach house rental that is a short walk to a sandy beach. With easy access to a private beach, you can make your way down to the water at your own leisure without worrying about finding a place to park or wondering whether there will be a good spot left to place your towel. Pull out a book and listen to the waves come in and when hunger strikes, the kitchen is a short walk away and the picnic tables on the beach allow you to eat whenever necessary without missing out on any of the fun.

When most individuals travel to South Haven, it is for a relaxing family vacation close to the soothing sounds of the lake. Since your dog is also part of the family, why not bring him along when you stay in a pets welcome vacation rental that has a fenced in front and backyard. He can also enjoy the fresh air and picturesque outdoors and your children will be delighted that their best friend can make the adventure along with the family. As the children play in the heated pool and you relax in the hot tub of your secluded, wooded lot, your dog can play a few feet away on the grass or on the deck. It really is a family adventure when you can bring along every valued member of your household.

If your trip to South Haven includes extended members of your family, then you will need a lodging option that allows you to house everyone in the same area. Hotels can separate members of your party, making it difficult to get everyone moving for the day’s activities. With a large vacation rental house, however, everyone can stay in a centralized area and enjoy the perks that come with ideally situated accommodations. When the beach and the attractions of the downtown area are a short walk away, individuals can participate in those activities that interest them without worrying about transportation. The younger children and their parents can head to the easily accessible beach that lies directly behind the house as those who prefer to hit the town walk to the boutique shops and cafes. Everyone can have a fulfilling vacation while enjoying each other’s company in a vacation rental with plenty of space and a location that suites a variety of needs.

For a romantic weekend getaway, a South Haven condo rental with views of Black River harbor is the perfect place to escape from the crowds. Relax on your balcony as the boats begin to make their way back to their slips, and then venture to one of the nearby restaurants for a cozy meal for two. With North and South Beach just a short walk away, your South Haven vacation can be whatever you can imagine.

HomeAway.com has the most comprehensive selection of vacation rental homes on the Internet. For an alternative lodging option, look into a South Haven condo for your next trip to Southwestern Michigan.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jennifer_Weiss

Top 10 Winter Vacations

Summer is typically the season that everyone thinks of when planning their vacations. Where the people were facing an ice age ahead, with temperatures so cold it could freeze your blood instantly.

Everyone was working hard on keeping warm. They were hiding in a library which was really convenient. You wouldn't run out of things to burn in a library that is full of books. In their effort to stay warm, they kept their fireplace ablaze by burning library books, feeding the fire continually for that much needed warmth.

A homeless guy who had to survive winter in the streets crushed up paper and stuffed his clothes with them for insulation. Insulate your clothing to keep the warmth in and the cold out. Crushing the paper trapped air. Air is a great insulator of heat. So that made a lot of sense.

When it comes to staying warm in winter, remember 2 things.

1. Generate heat.

2. Insulate to keep the heat in and the cold out.

To generate heat, most modern homes have a proper heating system. Just make sure you pay your heating bills. If you can't pay the bills, get your bills paid on your behalf. For example, if you are a U.S. resident, you can get free heating at http://www.cheapestsale.com/free-heating.html

If you use an old fashion log fireplace, stock up on plenty of firewood in case you get snowed in.

As for insulation, wear layers of clothing to keep warm. Start off with a base layer. The thermal underwear. Ideally, your thermal underwear should fit like second skin. The goal is to keep your body heat in. Pure cotton thermal underwear would probably work if the temperature is above 5 degrees celsius. Colder than that and you need something much warmer. Like wool.

On top of the thermal underwear, you might want to wear a wool sweater and thick denim jeans or wool pants. You might want to add on a warm jacket or even a trenchcoat over the sweater. Depending on the severity of cold you might face, you might want to add more layers. Don't forget your gloves, scarf, woolen hat, ear muffs, and boots. If it is really very cold, you might even need a ski mask.

Another trick that works for me and my kids is to apply a aromatherapy massage oil right after towelling dry after a hot bath. On a winter vacation, at the end of a day out in the cold, we were only too happy to get back to the hotel room where we would take turns in a hot bath. I would dilute 3 drops of mandarin oil in 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil like grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil and put in into the bath water. My kids loved it. I brought along some mandarin essential oil. I also made a massage oil by diluting 1 drop of mandarin oil to every 1 teaspoon of olive oil or sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil. After bathing each child, I'd rub him all over with plenty of this massage oil. When I ran out of mandarin oil, I used tea tree oil. The massage oil helped seal some warmth and moisture as the air was very dry.

Drinking a cup of ginger tea helps you body fight the cold too. Drinking plenty of hot soup at meals warms up the body beautifully.

Carry along a cashmere shawl, or at least a wool wrap with you so you can wrap that around you when you need additional warmth.

Finally, huddle up close to a loved warm so you can keep each other warm. That's how our ancestors survived the cold winters when they lived in caves. They would huddle close together near the fire to keep warm.
